Second set of exercises from "The Sam Loyd's problems (2)" 1°) Mother's jam puzzle 2°) Find two numbers a and b such that a + b = y and a.b = y => problem refers to the general problem of finding two numbers of which the sum and the product are given. e.g. a+b = S and a.b = P => Solve the equation a(S-a)=P or a2 - S.a + P = 0 e.g. a2 - 10a + 16 = 0 by completing the square : (a - 5)2 - 25 +16 = 0 (a - 5)2 = 9 a - 5 = 3 or a - 5 = -3 so that a = 8 (and b = 2) or a = 2 (and b = 8) |
